Comment:

I open 2 files with similar formats with questions. Working this way I see definite value change with progression, less hue change. I have many more in progress with some differences. Look forward to input tomorow

Assignment 4: Transpose colors of equal value

assignment

Criteria

Transpose 4 warm outer colors into 4 cool inner colors by changing only hue, not value

  • Replicate the four color comparison format developed by Albers.
  • All outer colors should be warm; all inner colors should be cool – or vice versa.
  • Outer and inner colors must differ only in hue, not value.
  • Vary the values so that, as in music, you have high, medium and low notes.

Constraints

Outer colors and inner colors have opposite color “temperatures”: Outer colors are warm; inner colors are cool, or vice versa.

Albers reference

Chapter XIV, “Color intervals and transformation”, and chapter XXIII, “Equal light intensity – vanishing boundaries”

Hints for success

  • Compare in multiple directions: outer-inner, left-right, up-down
  • Borders between equal value colors will be soft, fuzzy, indistinct
  • Look for equal hardness along the borders of neighboring hues
  • Use a movable swatch to test using Albers’ after-image trick

Common problems

Inner colors are too dark
