Assignment 1: Toothpick module studies

Criteria

  1. Establish a module (one or more toothpicks in relation)
  2. Establish a “program” or rule defining the relationship between a module and its predecessor (change in position and/or angle)
  3. Define logical ending criteria
  4. Carry out the program until you reach your endpoint
  5. Record your results, and evaluate

Comment:

#1 – 2 toothpicks with 1 toothpick in between and 1/2 way up, all fat ends facing out. 2nd module attaches and aligns with 2 pointed ends at midway.
End point is when it draws a “square”.
#2 – same module as first with and additional toothpick added at 45 degrees.pointed end in and just below other pointed ends. The second module is added at 90 degrees to single toothpick on first module. Program ends when it forms an octagon. (Needs one more module)
#3 – Module consists of 3 toothpicks, 2 touching midway up third and at 45 degree angle. Each additional module is added only fat end to skinny end and the program ends when 2 skinny ends touch at middle top and middle bottom.

Comment:

My module is two toothpicks side by side matching unlike end type. The program is to make subsequent modules with sub-components (i.e., toothpicks) separated by a multiple of the original module width (1/8″). Increase multiple until 8/8″, then decrease until back to 1/8″,

1 Module consists of 12 side picks 6 on each side and one centre pick. the fat end of the centre pick is touched by the fat end of two toothpicks (one on each side both angled down the pick. Each subsequent pick is added along the centre pick at the fat end and all the picks are evenly spaced along the centre pick until the side picks end at the pointy end of the centre pick. the module is a triangular shape with one end the starting point and the other end open.
2 the programme is to abut at either end of the module other modules –
3 The logical end of the fav programme is that the programme ends

in a circle with the joined end of the modules touching and spiralling out from the centre of the triangle created by the first two modules – which touch each other at their open ends

Program 1 contains 3 toothpicks (I have the pointy at both ends kind until I can find the other kind). M-1 is placed vertically on the board. The tip of M-2 touches the tip of M-1 at a 60 degree angle. M-3 touches the tips of M-1 and M-2 with its tips forming an equilateral triangle. Program 2: M-1 extends perpendicular from the center of the base of P-1. M-2 extends from the tip of M-1 that is touching the base of P-1 at a 60 degree angle from the right of M-1. M-3 connects to the tips of M-1 and M-2 forming another equilateral triangle. Repeat.

M-1 is placed vertically on board. M-2 is placed to the right of M-1 horizontally to form a right angle with the Left tip of M-2 touching the top tip of M-1. M-3 is placed vertically parallel one toothpick width to the right of M-1with the top of the tip touching M-2. M-4 is placed horizontally parallel one toothpick width to the Right of M-3. Each subsequent program increases the parallel distance by one toothpick width until the two toothpicks are touching at the bottom ends.

Comment:

It helped to photograph the module and print it many times and cut it out so that I could play with my programme and see the design without having to spend the time building the toothpicks each time to find a programme I liked.

Module – 6 toothpicks, touching at the thick end and sliding away along the original toothpick by 1/2 cent increments.
