The fifth session of the Design and Color class for Winter 2017 was held on Wednesday, February 1. We continued our exploration with cardboard rolls; Dick shared a slideshow of inventive and often humorous examples of ‘what if?’; and during the critique Dick discussed the importance of considering the full range of artistic options by way of using a ‘check off’ list before committing to a project. The fourth session of the Design and Color class for Winter 2017 was held on Wednesday, January 25. The new homework assignment is to explore opportunities for modular design using a geometric shape instead of a toothpick. Students shared more cardboard roll creations and modular toothpick designs, and Karen shared a clear and thorough presentation on understanding design programs.
The fourth session of the Color Relationships 2 class for Fall 2016 was held on Wednesday, September 21. We critiqued the homework (Volume Color), addressed common problems that students encountered, and discussed again the benefits of using volume color in artwork. The class was introduced to white light and shadows, and given a new homework assignment, Create the illusion of white light.
The fifth and final session of the Color Relationships class for Spring 2016 was held on Wednesday, May 4. The class shared the results of their last assignment, heard from guest artist Valérie about her color explorations, and watched a video that demonstrated how color, pattern, and viewing distance are all important considerations when creating a work of art. The first session of the Color Relationships class for Spring 2016 was held on Wednesday, April 6. A new group of eleven students was introduced to new ways of thinking about color, including arrays, halation, and the primary colors of pigment (hint: it’s not the traditional red, yellow, blue!). The first session of the Winter 2015 Color Relationships class was held on Friday, January 9. This series of lessons will address the visual phenomena of films, veils, volume color, white light, and colored light. We will explore how we perceive these phenomena, and what strategies we must develop in order to recreate them in our media. We reviewed concepts of arrays and halation that were fundamental to Color Relationships 1, held in the fall of 2014. Then the class was challenged to create an illusion of a black film, using only swatches of opaque gray. The solution was given and discussed, and a new challenge assigned for homework: Create the illusion of a colored film over two or more colors.
