The Hui No‘eau just opened its 2021 Annual Juried Exhibition. They recorded an opening reception video featuring a gallery walkthrough by jurors Kari McCarthy and Dick Nelson. Kari is an established Maui artist and one of Dick’s many longtime students.
The two pay tribute to the legacy great art teachers create, with Kari saying, “Because of Dick I see the world differently”, and Dick saying of his teacher, Josef Albers, “To him I owe everything”. Kari mentioned still learning new things from Dick during the jurying process.
As Dick and Kari direct our attention and point out examples of visual phenomena, past students will recognize familiar terms and principles, and enjoy seeing them put to use. For others, the video is a great introduction to the richness and depth of learning possible with Dick.
Of course they can’t talk about every one of the 85 pieces in the show, but they single out about fifteen, and praise the installer, who “has done a magnificent job of making every piece important”.

As great as it is to see the high-quality photos of the artwork (and essential for distant fans like me), art is always better in person. If you’re living on or visiting Maui, don’t miss this show, on display through February 18. The Hui is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays from 9am-4pm.
