If I may guess at what impressed Dick so much, I would say it is that Hughes has truly exploited (sixth phase of creative problem solving) his understanding of perspective, space, light, shade, and human perception to create works of visual art that literally involve the viewer. In addition, he knows who he is and what he is trying to say, and all elements of the compositions support that mission.
